D. APPOINTMENT OF INSTRUCTORS and TEACHER TRAINERS

1. The ESA Instrument Committees

See Appendix D1 Instrument Committees a. The appointment of new Teacher Trainers and Instructors will be carried out by the ESA Instrument Committees. b. The ESA Instrument Committees will consist of 3 - 5 Teacher Trainers who have been elected by the ESA Teacher Trainers. c. The term of office for ESA Instrument Committees is three years. d. In dealing with applications from Teachers of newer Instruments, the ESA Board of Directors will consult ESA Teacher Trainers for those Instruments as appropriate. e. In addition to the specific responsibilities detailed below, the Instrument Committees will serve as an Advisory Board to both the national Suzuki associations and individual Teachers. 2. Instructor Appointment as Instructor is formal recognition of having the skills, attributes and commitment to becoming a Teacher Trainer. Requirements 3. Mentor A Mentor is a Teacher Trainer of the candidate’s choice who is an experienced and trusted advisor. To assist the candidate in preparing for Instructor, the Mentor should – a. Create openings for the candidate to teach on Workshops at home and abroad b. Allow observation of Teacher Training Courses c. Organise opportunities where possible for candidates to train teachers under supervision d. Keep an open line of communication for discussion, feedback and advice a. Qualified to ESA Level 5, or equivalent in another Regional Association b. Minimum 10 years teaching experience as a qualified SUZUKI™ Teacher

 Can the candidate teach Twinkle to teachers to a high standard?  Is this candidate willing to serve the SUZUKI™ Community?

4. Preparation Before applying for Instructor, a period of preparation with a Mentor is required so that the candidate can –  Establish a clear understanding of what is involved in being a Teacher Trainer  Identify whether they are suited to the role of Teacher Trainer

C andidates should - a. Invite their Mentor to observe their teaching, pupils’ recitals and parent talks b. Observe Teacher Training courses c. Video their work, ideally with teachers, and discuss with their Mentor d. Discuss their potential to be a Teacher Trainer with their Mentor 5. Application for Instructor a. Candidate applies to the ESA Instrument Committee to become an Instructor. The ESA must register the success or failure of each application and communicate the outcome to the Candidate as well as the national Suzuki association for their information. See Appendix D4 Instructor Application Form b. If approved, the candidate is then appointed as an Instructor by the ESA Instrument Committee. c. Instructor appointments are only valid when the ESA has sent a confirmation letter to the Candidate, confirming that the requirements have been fulfilled. d. The Instructor spends a period of at least two years in which he/she - i. observes and helps on ESA-recognised Teacher Training courses ii. attends a minimum of two examinations, one of which is on the Instructor’s own instrument iii. gets experience from every possible source. See Appendix D5 Course Content for Training of Instructors 6. Application for Teacher Trainer After a training period of two to four years, the Instructor may apply to become a full Teacher Trainer/Examiner. See Appendix D2 Application Criteria for Instructor Candidates See Appendix D3 Procedure for processing Instructor Applications iii. A brief account of the work undertaken during Instructor Training iv. Any videos which were not submitted with the Instructor application v. A video of the candidate training teachers vi. A detailed report from the Instructor’s Mentor covering –  all points listed in Appendix D5 Course Content for Training of Instructors  essential skills such as communication, team building and organisation  ability to be a good role model to trainees in terms of playing, teaching and applying the SUZUKI™ Method Philosophy vii. Two letters of recommendation from ESA Teacher Trainers supporting the appointment. These letters should confirm - - The Instructor's involvement with Teacher Training activities - The Instructor’s observation of at least two examination sessions - these should be at different times and in different places if possible a. To apply, the Instructor must present – i. A formal letter of application ii. A brief up-to-date Curriculum Vitae

See Appendix D2 for deadlines for Applications g. Instructors appointed as Teacher Trainers/Examiners by the ESA Instrument Committee will receive a letter of congratulations confirming the appointment and an ESA Teacher Trainer Certificate. See Appendix C5 Teacher Trainer Certificate in Examinations Manual 3. Viola Teacher Trainer applications for Violin Teacher Trainer Viola Teacher Trainers should apply to the ESA Violin Committee to be a Violin Teacher Trainer submitting all requirements for Instructor and Teacher Training applications, together with a letter asking for exemption from an Instructorship. 4. Violin Teacher Trainer applications for Viola Teacher Trainer Violin Teacher Trainers should apply to the ESA Viola Committee to be a Viola Teacher Trainer submitting all requirements for Instructor and Teacher Training applications, together with a letter asking for exemption from an Instructorship. 5. Clarification of terms and titles a. An Instructor should be distinguished from the other Teachers co-opted to teach on courses. b. An Instructor must have Level 5 and complete the formal application procedure described in Item 2 above. c. An Instructor cannot be a Teacher Training Course Director, nor present candidates for Examinations, but he/she may serve as a Teacher Training Course Co-ordinator (organiser) with supervision from an ESA Teacher Trainer. d. Many teachers with special abilities who are not Instructors or Teacher Trainers can make a valuable contribution to Teacher Training Courses. National Suzuki associations and Teacher Training Course Directors are encouraged to co-opt these special Teachers and give them the recognition they deserve.

E. RECOGNITION OF TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS FROM OTHER REGIONS

1. Definition of regions At present, there are five Regional Suzuki Associations, of which ESA is one. The others are -  ARSA (Asia Region Suzuki Association) which covers Asia, except Japan  PPSA (Pan Pacific Suzuki Association) covering Australia, New Zealand and Oceania  SAA (Suzuki Association of the Americas) covering North, Central and South America  TERI (Talent Education Research Institute) which covers Japan All of these regions have their own independent SUZUKI™ Teacher Training programmes. Some of these have a unified system of certification, e.g. ESA and PPSA, whereas others do not. 2. Procedure for obtaining recognition a. All applications must be sent to the ESA Office, either direct by the applicant or through the national Suzuki association where he or she intends to work. b. The documentation required depends on the applicant’s qualifications. See Appendix E1 Recognition of Teachers with Approved Accreditation See Appendix E2 Recognition of Teachers without Approved Accreditation c. All credentials will be properly checked by the ESA with the candidate’s regional Suzuki association and/or Teacher Trainer. d. The ESA’s decision will be communicated to the applicant with a copy to the ESA national Suzuki association. Recognition will be in the form of an official letter or certificate. 3. Recognition of Teachers with Approved Accreditation ESA will automatically and routinely recognise all those SUZUKI™ teachers who provide documentation to prove that they have obtained approved accreditation from another Region. See Appendix E1 Recognition of Teachers with Approved Accreditation 4. Recognition of Teachers without Approved Accreditation SUZUKI™ teachers without approved accreditation may, in certain circumstances, obtain recognition of the Teacher Training which they have completed in another Region. a. Recognition will be on a case by case basis. b. All applications for recognition must be submitted or referred to the ESA Office and will be considered by the relevant ESA Instrument Committee, who will make a recommendation to the ESA Board.

c. The guiding principle is that every Teacher who seeks recognition must deliver proof of the expertise required to obtain the equivalent ESA level. This can be done either by – i. taking a special examination as outlined in Teacher Training Manual S ection B, 1d OR ii. by submitting an application with documentation and videos as outlined in Appendix E2 Recognition of Teachers without Approved Accreditation 5. Teacher Membership of ESA Teachers are normally members of the ESA through the national Suzuki association in their country of residence. Where a country has no national association, Individual Associate membership of ESA will be offered - see ESA Website for details. B3 Membership is open to all interested Teachers regardless of their qualifications. B3 members are not entitled to call themselves SUZUKI™ teachers. B2 Membership (ESA Primary Certificate) is open to all SUZUKI™ Teachers who have obtained at least ESA Level 1 or had their qualification approved by the ESA as being equivalent to Levels 1 or 2. B1 Membership (ESA Intermediate Certificate) is open to Teachers who have taken at least ESA Level 3 or had their qualification approved by ESA as being equivalent to Level 3 or 4. A Membership (ESA Diploma) is open to all Teachers who have passed ESA Level 5 or had their qualifications approved by ESA as being equivalent to Level 5. 6. Teacher Directory Listings Teachers who have obtained approved qualifications in other Regions, or who have been specifically recognised by the ESA, may be listed in ESA in national directories with their equivalent level, followed by the abbreviated name of the regional association (e.g. 2 PPSA, 5 SAA).

APPENDIX D1 INSTRUMENT COMMITTEES 1. There is a Committee for each SUZUKI™ Instrument .

2. The number of Committee members and how the Committee is selected will depend on the number of Teachers Trainers for that instrument. Category No. Teacher Trainers No. Committee Members Elected/Appointed A Instruments with more than 20 5 Elected by Teacher Trainers B Instruments with less than 20 3 Elected by Teacher Trainers C Instruments with less than 3 3 Appointed by ESA Board as required 3. The Election of Category A and B Instrument Committee members will be by secret ballot. The Committee Member with the highest number of votes will be appointed Chairperson. No more than two Committee Members from the same Country can be elected to an Instrument Committee. Teacher Trainers cannot be members of more than one Instrument Committee at any one time. 4. The approval of Category A and B Instrument Committees will be made at the ESA Board Meeting with the appointment being made at the ESA AGM. 5. The term of office for Category A and B Members of the Instrument Committees is three years renewable. 7. Role and responsibilities of the Instrument Committees a. The Chairperson of each ESA Instrument Committee i. is appointed ESA Representative on the ISA Instrument Committee ii. will meet to discuss, decide, advise on and submit all Instrument agenda items to the ESA Board for approval b. Decisions of the Instrument Committees are taken by a majority vote, with the Chairperson having the casting vote. Teachers can appeal to the ESA Board against the ESA Instrument Committee decisions. The ESA Board must define an appeal process, which must i. be handled in a neutral and professional manner ii. make a decision based on sound principles and ESA Statutes and Bylaws c. ESA Instrument Committees will be responsible for - i. the appointment of Instructors and Teacher Trainers according to ESA procedures in Section D ii. applications for ESA Recognition from Teachers and Teacher Trainers from other Regions according to ESA procedures in Section E iii. submitting an Annual Report to the ESA Board for their meeting in March each year 6. Category C Instrument Committees will be appointed by the ESA Board on an application basis. Members can be Teachers or Teacher Trainers.

APPENDIX D2 APPLICATION CRITERIA FOR INSTRUCTOR CANDIDATES Applications for Instructor & Teacher Trainer will be considered three times a year in –  March  July  November Applications are to be sent to the ESA Office by the end of –  January  May  September Applicants can expect a reply to their application during the months of -  April  August  December The Candidate must satisfy the following criteria in order to apply for Instructor - 1. Letter of application including personal reasons for wanting to become a Teacher Trainer.

2. Letter of recommendation from the Mentor.

3. Detailed plan for Instructor Training (as per Appendix D5) if appointed, including nomination of a Teacher Trainer to be Supervisor throughout the Instructorship and the locations where the Instructorship will take place.

4. Resumé of professional experience listing any special awards, concerts, prizes, etc.

5. Successful achievement of Level 5 or equivalent SUZUKI™ training in other regional associations on the instrument named in the application. 6. Professional degree in the Candidate’s instrument from a conservatory, university or other accredited Institution, or equivalent advanced musical training. Applications for Violin Instructor may present a degree in Viola Application for Viola Instructor may present a degree in Violin 7. At least 10 years teaching experience covering all levels of the SUZUKI™ repertoire, as well as non-SUZUKI™ repertoire on the instrument named in the application. The ESA Instrument Committee is allowed to make exceptions to this rule if the ESA Board judges this to be necessary in special circumstances. 8. Contact details for references from three people who are familiar with the Candidate's work a. two from Teacher-Trainers of the candidate's instrument* preferably  one from the candidate’s country of residence  one from outside the candidate’s country or residence

one of these being the Teacher Trainer of the Candidates Level 5 Course *or for Viola, one Viola Teacher-Trainer and one Violin Teacher-Trainer b. a respected musician

9. Videos showing - Either a. A concert performance and an individual lesson of Book 1 pupils Or b. A concert performance and individual lesson of advanced pupils who have studied with the Candidate for at least 2 years Candidates may not have students across all Levels at any one point in time, therefore they may choose which videos to submit with the Instructor application and which to submit with the Teacher Trainer application. Whichever of these videos is not submitted with the Instructor application, must be submitted with the Teacher Trainer application. c. A group lesson. All pupils in the videos should be of the instrument on which the Candidate is applying to become an Instructor. An introduction to the pupils should be given at the beginning of each recording e.g.  How long have they been taught by the Candidate?  Are they still being taught by the Candidate at the time of the recording?  Have they always been taught by the Candidate? Material : the teaching material used should exclusively be the most recent version of the core material of the respective instrument. Length : a. one concert performance of Book 1 pupils individual lessons of Book 1 pupils (15-20 minutes) b. one concert performance of Advanced pupils individual lesson of advanced pupils (30 – 45 minutes) c. one group lesson (30 minutes) Please do not include tuning and lining-up pupils in the videos Criteria : the videos will be assessed on the same criteria as the SUZUKI™ Teacher Training examinations (tone, musicality, technique, memory, communication and knowledge of teaching points). Teaching style : The Instrument Committees expect to see a lesson taught according to the main principals of the SUZUKI™ Method:  Positive environment  Reinforcement of the basics on all levels (posture, tone production)  Parents’ involvement  Mother tongue approach (imitation more important than explanation with emphasis on listening in a suitable manner for each level)

10. English language mastery is recommended but not a requirement.

11. It is strongly recommended that the Candidate asks their Mentor to check through their application, including all video footage, before submitting to the ESA Office. The Mentor should advise the Candidate on the videos to be submitted with the application. Videos which do not meet the criteria may be rejected and additional videos requested. 12. The ESA Instrument Committee may ask for a meeting/interview with the candidate before they recommend the appointment.

APPENDIX D3 PROCEDURE FOR PROCESSING INSTRUCTOR APPLICATIONS

1. The Instructor Application Form should be completed and sent to the ESA Office with all supporting documents and Videos See Appendix D2 2. If an exception to the criteria outlined in Appendix D2 is requested (e.g. if the candidate does not have 10 years teaching experience covering all Levels of the SUZUKI™ repertoire) a formal letter from the national Suzuki association is required outlining the specific reasons for such a request. 3. The application is registered by the ESA Office and then sent to the relevant ESA Instrument Committee for assessment. 4. The National Suzuki association will be informed of those applications received from Candidates resident in their country and they will be invited to submit a reference addressed to the Instrument Committee and sent to the ESA Office. 5. The Candidate will be informed of the Instrument Committee’s decision by the ESA Office. a. If approved, a letter of appointment is sent by the ESA Office. The appointment is not valid until confirmed by the ESA. b. In cases where the application is rejected, the Candidate must be given specific reasons for the rejection. i. The Candidate should be given the opportunity to address the areas of concern and have the option to reapply. ii. If the Candidate considers that the reasons given for rejecting the application are not fair, he/she may appeal to the ESA Board of Directors within 3 months after the date the decision was communicated to him/her.

APPENDIX D5 COURSE CONTENT FOR TRAINING OF INSTRUCTORS

1. Observation of experienced Teacher Trainers running courses in the Instructor's own country and abroad.

2. Familiarity with the structure of a Teacher Training course.

3. Familiarity with the administration involved in a Teacher Training Course as outlined in the ESA Teacher Training and Examinations Manual. 4. Observation of examinations and ability to write about or discuss examination procedure and responsibility. **

5. Organising Workshops and teaching on them. Sharing knowledge with other Teachers, including Teachers of other instruments. **

6. Supervised teaching of adults on a Training Course. **

7. Giving talks or demonstrations about SUZUKI™ Method to Teachers or parent groups.

8. Continued study of early books and application of SUZUKI™ philosophy.

9. Continued learning of additional repertoire and advanced techniques.

10. Further development on any points raised by the Instrument Committee through Feedback on the Videos submitted for the Instructor Application

** This part of the training to be carried out with the Instructor’s Mentor and at least one other Teacher Trainer.

APPENDIX E1 RECOGNITION OF TEACHERS WITH APPROVED ACCREDITATION

1. Automatically approved qualifications for A Membership The following will be routinely accepted as A members, subject to full checks of their credentials - a. All SUZUKI™ Teacher Trainers who have been appointed or recognised by other Regions b. Graduates of the Talent Education Research Institute in Japan (TERI) c. Teachers who hold full Diplomas from the Pan-Pacific Suzuki Association (PPSA) d. Teachers who trained on a long term University Course approved by the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) and obtained a Masters degree. Other qualifications may be added to the list following further research by the ESA Instrument Committee or the ESA Qualifications Committee - - Diplomas from certain long term courses in the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) - Specific qualifications from Asia Suzuki Association (ASA) - Specific qualifications from Talent Education Research Institute (TERI) Any additions require approval by the ESA Board or Directors. In the meantime, all other applications will be assessed according to the rules in Appendix E2. 2. Automatically approved qualifications for B Membership The following accreditations for all SUZUKI™ Instruments will be automatically recognised at the appropriate levels as set out in the table below. Once ESA recognition is given, any teacher from another Region living and teaching in the ESA Region is expected to continue their SUZUKI™ Teacher Training within the ESA Teacher Training Program.

APPENDIX E2 RECOGNITION OF TEACHERS WITHOUT APPROVED ACCREDITATION

1. Evaluation of qualifications All applications from Teachers without approved accreditation will be referred to the relevant ESA Instrument Committee. Where necessary the ESA Instrument Committee may co-opt additional Teachers to help with the assessment. The ESA Instrument Committee must do the following - a. Assess the background, previous training, long or short-term course Certifications of the applicant and check these with the applicant’s regional association and at least one of the SUZUKI™ Teacher Trainers involved. b. Decide the ESA level which is equivalent to the specific training of the applicant. c. If necessary, seek the advice of an ESA Teacher Trainer to assist in judging the quality of the applicant’s teaching. d. Where appropriate, advise applicants to seek ESA Teacher Training. e. The ESA is at liberty to seek consultation from the national Suzuki association where the applicant intends to work and share any relevant information with them, including the application documents and videos. 2. Recognition of Teachers who have followed long term Teacher Training Courses The recognition of Teachers who have undertaken long term or apprenticeship training in another region will usually be based on the recommendation of their Teacher Trainer(s). However, in some cases further proof of ability and experience may be required. 3. Applications from Teachers who have completed SAA Units but have no Practicums ESA Practicum Not all SAA Teachers have taken a Practicum and therefore do not meet the requirements of ESA recognition. The ESA now offer a Practicum Course based on the SAA Practicum Unit to enable SAA Teachers to qualify for ESA recognition. S ee Teacher Training Manual Section B 8b Alternative to Practicum In the event that the ESA Instrument Committee establish that an ESA Practicum is either not available in a reasonable time frame or not appropriate to the application, SAA applicants for ESA Recognition will be invited to attend an ESA Teacher Training Course over a period of three weekends in order to  Observe Teacher Training at a variety of ESA Levels  Teach and perform An assessment of the ESA Level of the applicant will be made by the Course Director and a recommendation made to the relevant Instrument Committee. The applicant may be asked to pay a nominal fee to cover observation, assessment and any administrative time for the Course Director.

4. Application procedure All applications must be sent to the ESA Office, either direct by the applicant or through the national Suzuki association where he or she intends to work. Applications should include the following: - - CV including details of the applicant’s SUZUKI™ training and experience - Copies or other proof of all relevant certification - Names and contact details of the Teacher Trainer(s) with whom the applicant trained, plus any other relevant references 5. Applications from Teachers who have completed other short term Training In addition to the letter of application and the documents listed above, the applicant should deliver the following to the ESA Office - a. Proof of instrumental education/ability - professional Diploma from a recognized Institution or a video with a performance by the applicant of at least one major piece. b. Proof of Teacher Training in the SUZUKI™ methodology - numbers of hours of observation, individual lessons and supervised teaching, books covered, details of additional observation, attendance at conferences etc. c. Proof of ability to teach at the required level - a video with lessons of at least two students at the appropriate levels, plus any other supporting materials. The applicant may also indicate if a Teacher Trainer has worked with his/her students and is prepared to discuss the applicant’s work with the Instrument Committee.

APPENDIX E3 RECOGNITION OF TEACHER TRAINERS FROM OTHER REGIONS

A SUZUKI™ Teacher Trainer from another region may apply to be recognised as a SUZUKI™ Teacher Trainer for the ESA region.

1. Evaluation of qualifications The candidate is required to – a. Be familiar with the ESA Teacher Training Manual and the Examinations Manual which are available on the ESA website and from the ESA Office. b. Have observed at least five ESA Teacher Examinations (preferably at two different Juries) at least one of which is a Level 1 Examination. c. Keep a written log of examinations observed which is signed and dated by the Examiner present. 2. Application procedure Applications should be made in writing to the ESA Instrument Committee, addressed to the ESA Office and include – a. A formal letter of application b. A brief C.V. c. A copy of the Examinations log book Candidates approved by the ESA Instrument Committee will be invited to attend and be presented to the ESA Annual General Meeting following their formal appointment by the ESA Board. A SUZUKI™ Teacher Trainer who has been recognised as an ESA Teacher Trainer but is not resident in the ESA region will require an invitation to conduct Teacher Training Courses in the ESA region.
